The first worship service since the merger of the First Presbyterian Church of the Panther Valley, Summit Hill, and the First Presbyterian Church, Jim Thorpe, was held for the combined congregation in the Summit Hill church yesterday. Woman facing theft, forgery charges

A Lansford woman is facing charges of forgery and theft stemming from two incidents earlier this year in which she entered a relative's home on Fourth Street in Jim Thorpe, stole checks and forged them. Gina Marie Raczkowski of the 200 block of West Bertsch Street is charged in connection with incidents that happened between May 6-19 and on June 12. In the first case, Jim Thorpe police said the woman is facing 12 counts of forgery and one count each of theft by unlawful taking or disposition and receiving stolen property.

Gaming funds sought to build training facility in Carbon Co.

Carbon County commissioners applied for a $500,000 gaming grant for the construction of an emergency operations and training center near the county prison in Nesquehoning on Thursday. Commissioner Chairman Wayne Nothstein said this funding would go toward building a burn building for firefighter training, and other funding will pay for widening the road and drainage.

A Pennsylvania Department of Transportation official said Tuesday the timetable for the removal of rocks on Route 209 leading from Lehighton to Jim Thorpe will be determined after bids for the work are opened. “The bid opening for the work is soon,” said PennDOT spokesman Sean Brown.

A Jim Thorpe man, facing six counts of recklessly endangering another person, will have those charges dropped after the alleged victim recanted her story in Carbon County court Tuesday. Dante Lewis Matos, 29, was charged for an incident on Aug. 30, 2016,in the 400 block of Center Avenue, when borough police responded to a 911 call of an assault incident.

Second man involved in sexual assault case enters guilty plea

The second man involved in a sexual assault case in Palmerton entered a guilty plea in Carbon County court on Tuesday afternoon to a lesser charge. Rafael Alberto Escobar Garcia, 30, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of indecent assault, as a misdemeanor two, for an incident on Dec. 17, 2016, in an apartment along Delaware Avenue in Palmerton and involving a then 18-year-old female as the victim.
